INCLUSIVITY PHILOSOPHY FOR NWAC 2020

The 73rd NWAC is committed to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Upholding this commitment means being thoughtful about creating spaces wherein a multiplicity of voices are invited, welcomed, heard, and appreciated. As anthropologists, we recognize that inclusive spaces do not occur spontaneously, but rather, require active work. In order to facilitate a respectful, enjoyable, and productive conference experience for all participants, the 73rd NWAC will host three Wednesday evening receptions that recognize our shared interests in anthropology of the Pacific Northwest. Creating such spaces welcomes a diversity of otherwise unrepresented anthropological perspectives that ultimately strengthen the field through critical thought and supporting individuals through shared experiences. In providing these spaces it is our intent to foster inter-community connections and shared experiences as a primer for networking at the conference.  It is our hope that these receptions will embolden community members and nurture a sense of importance and shared identity. As spaces of inclusion, everyone is welcome to attend these receptions; however, if you are coming as an ally, active listening is the best way to support session attendees to ensure that the time is used to raise the voices of those who are otherwise not heard.
